About the author : Anatolia

Menemen is the dish Turkish families argue about: onion or no onion, soft or firm, cheese or never. Ours is cooked the way it is done on the Aegean coast — slowly, and soft.

What is menemen?

Menemen is eggs cooked into tomatoes and green peppers rather than beside them. The peppers go into the pan first and are allowed to soften and sweeten, then the tomatoes break down into a light sauce, and only at the end are the eggs stirred through so they stay creamy instead of setting into curds. It takes its name from the town of Menemen near İzmir. In Turkey it is eaten with bread, scooped straight from the pan, and it is as much a late-night dish as a breakfast one.

How we prepare it at Anatolia Grill

We cook each portion to order in its own pan — menemen does not survive being made in advance. The peppers get their time to soften, the tomatoes are cooked down rather than dropped in raw, and the eggs are folded in off the heat so the finished dish is glossy and spoonable. It arrives with warm homemade bread for scooping. 189 CZK, available from the moment we open at 08:00 until we close at midnight.

Take it home from Anatolia Meat Market

The eggs we cook with come through the same chain as everything else on our menu — our farm in Rakovník produces fresh eggs, and you can buy them, along with the peppers, cheeses and sucuk that turn menemen into a full breakfast, at the Anatolia Meat Market next door.

From our own farm, not from a supplier

Anatolia Grill is part of Agro Řeřichy s.r.o., a Czech company that has been working in agriculture, meat processing and gastronomy for more than ten years. We breed our own lambs and fatten our own beef cattle at the farm in Rakovník, process them in our own slaughterhouse, and sell them in our own butchery in Prague — the shop right next to this restaurant. That is the reason the meat on your plate is traceable back to a single chain we control from start to finish.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I eat menemen in Prague?

At Anatolia Grill Restaurant on Na Poříčí, a short walk from Náměstí Republiky. We make menemen to order all day, from 08:00 to midnight.

What is the difference between menemen and shakshuka?

Shakshuka poaches whole eggs on top of a spiced tomato sauce and is usually North African or Levantine. Menemen stirs the eggs through the vegetables so the result is soft and scrambled, and it leans on green peppers rather than cumin and chilli.

Is menemen spicy?

It is mild by default. The green peppers give it flavour rather than heat, but ask and the kitchen will make it hotter.

Is menemen vegetarian?

Yes, our menemen is vegetarian. Many guests add sucuk to it — order it that way and it stops being vegetarian.
