About the author : Anatolia

A UNESCO-listed cultural tradition, brewed one cup at a time, and 79 CZK in the centre of Prague.

What is Turkish coffee?

Turkish coffee is made from beans ground to a powder finer than espresso — fine enough to feel like flour — and brewed slowly in a small long-handled pot called a cezve. It is never filtered. The grounds settle in the bottom of the cup, which is why you drink it slowly and stop before the last mouthful. Sugar goes in during brewing rather than afterwards, so you order by sweetness: sade (none), az şekerli (a little), orta (medium) or şekerli (sweet). UNESCO added Turkish coffee culture to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2013 — not the drink, the culture around it.

How we prepare it at Anatolia Grill

We brew each cup individually in a cezve, so it takes a few minutes and arrives with the foam on top intact. Tell your server how sweet you want it when you order, because it cannot be adjusted afterwards. 79 CZK, served with water. It is the traditional partner to baklava and künefe, and the bitterness is deliberate.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I drink real Turkish coffee in Prague?

At Anatolia Grill Restaurant, Na Poříčí 1933/36, Praha 1 — brewed in a cezve to order, every day from 08:00 to midnight.

How do I order Turkish coffee?

By sweetness, because the sugar is added during brewing: sade (unsweetened), az şekerli (little), orta (medium) or şekerli (sweet).

Why are there grounds at the bottom?

Turkish coffee is unfiltered by design. The grounds settle — drink slowly and leave the last mouthful in the cup.

What goes with Turkish coffee?

Baklava (229 CZK), künefe (199 CZK) or sütlaç (179 CZK). The bitterness of the coffee is meant to balance the syrup in the dessert.
