Not to be confused with the egg dish of a similar name — Turkish şakşuka has no eggs in it at all.

What is şakşuka?

Turkish şakşuka is fried eggplant, courgette and pepper, layered under a garlicky tomato sauce and usually finished with a spoon of yogurt. It is served at room temperature or cool, as a meze rather than a main course. The North African and Israeli shakshuka — eggs poached in spiced tomato — is a completely different dish that shares a root word. In Turkey, if you order şakşuka, vegetables are what arrive.

How we prepare it at Anatolia Grill

The vegetables are fried separately so each keeps its own character rather than dissolving into a stew, then dressed with tomato sauce and left to cool so the flavours settle. Served with yogurt on top and warm bread alongside. 139 CZK, and one of the seven mezes on our Mixed Appetizers plate.

No. Turkish şakşuka is fried eggplant and vegetables in tomato sauce, eaten cool as a meze. The egg dish is a different recipe from a different cuisine. If you want eggs in tomato and pepper, order our menemen instead.

Is şakşuka vegetarian?

Yes. It is vegetables and tomato sauce, served with yogurt on top — ask for it without yogurt and it becomes vegan.

Is it served hot or cold?

Cool or at room temperature, like most Turkish mezes.
